His research involves multivariable model predictive control of unstable processes. Danielle Dougherty received a BS from Widener University (1997) and a PhD under the direction of Doug Cooper from the University of Connecticut (2002), both in chemical engineeering. Her thesis was on multivariable adaptive model predictive control. Her current post-doc research focuses on modeling and controlling direct methanol fuel cell processes. Mutivariable loop interaction is a well-known control problem that is discussed in a host of popular texts. Computer tools such as Matlab/Simulink enable instructors and students alike to explore the phenomena by providing a high-level programming environment useful for simulating process control systems. The topics to be covered in a process control course, however, are numerous relative to the time allotted to them in the typical curriculum. Instructors must decide for themselves whether or not time spent with programming issues is time well spent in a process dynamics and control class. Many feel it is an appropriate use of time, and valid arguments can be made to support that viewpoint.

Design of an Intelligent Controller for Station Keeping, Attitude Control, and Path Tracking of a Quadrotor Using Recursive Neural Networks
During recent years there has been growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Moreover, the necessity to control and navigate these vehicles has attracted much attention from researchers in this field. This is mostly due to the fact that the interactions between turbulent airflows apply complex aerodynamic forces to the system. Since the dynamics of a quadrotor are non-linear and the ...
متن کاملDecentralized Fuzzy-PID Based Control Model for a Multivariable Liquid Level System
Multivariable liquid level control is essential in process industries to ensure quality of the product and safety of the equipment. However, the significant problems of the control system include excessive time consumption and percentage overshoot, which result from ineffective performance of the tuning methods of the PID controllers used for the system. In this paper, fuzzy logic was used to t...
متن کاملA Relationship Between Sensitivity and Stability of Multivariable Feedback Systems
U NDER the assumptions that a plant is completely deterministic and perfectly modeled, either open-loop compensation or closed-loop compensation can be used to achieve a desired overall design. However, the assumptions of determinism and perfect modeling are never satisfied in practice. When these assumptions do not hold, feedback control systems can possess properties such as stability, sensit...
متن کاملOptimal Control of Nonlinear Multivariable Systems
This paper concerns a study on the optimal control for nonlinear systems. An appropriate alternative in order to alleviate the nonlinearity of a system is the exact linearization approach. In this fashion, the nonlinear system has been linearized using input-output feedback linearization (IOFL). Then, by utilizing the well developed optimal control theory of linear systems, the compensated ...
متن کاملMultivariable Generalized Minimum Variance Control Based on Artificial Neural Networks and Gaussian Process Models
The control of an unknown multivariable nonlinear process represents a challenging problem. Model based approaches, like Generalized Minimum Variance, provide a flexible framework for addressing the main issues arising in the control of complex nonlinear systems. However, the final performance will depend heavily on the models representing the system. This work presents a comparative analysis o...
